Through time colors fade and the colorful moments of life sometimes reflect no color at all but instead, memories delicately posed to the imagination of colors.
This week I took the cross-stitch that is set up high on a bookshelf down to clean the shelves. I rarely take it down, and as it always is, I have to stop and wonder about the person who stitched such marvelous items for my eyes and thoughts. I could sit all day and admire these handmade items of the past. This one is still full of vibrance and is stitched on what is called perforated paper. Reds, blues, and greens were popular colors and this one in particular still shows the brightness of many stitches. In the second photo, you can see the stamp where this was still yet to be finished.
Then there are the colors still holding up in a jar of potpourri that my Great Aunt Carrie gave me on my wedding day. She entered them in the San Francisco Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915. I can only imagine how wonderful that would have been for her to be so excited about this entry. They still smell of clove and it is one reason I prefer to add clove in my own homemade potpourri. My Aunt Carrie is the one who got my wandering youth-self into gardening. Every time I pick a tomato I think of her because she was the very first to give me that taste right off the vine. From there on she gave me seeds and taught me how to plant. Her roses mean everything to me in that little jar and I can only imagine how beautiful the colors were when she picked them.
I have posted this sampler cross-stitch previously. It is of my Great Great Great Grandmother Chamberlain’s. She stitched this as all little girls did back in the 1800s as part of their lifestyle commanded for learning. It was a time for memorizing Bible verses and songs while passing the hours learning needed sewing skills in those days. She never finished it, but it hangs with honor in my home. You can see her faded name if you look hard enough.
As long as we see those delicate colors of the past and really listen to their perspective, I believe we go on in a positive way. At least that is how I look at those things and without those delicate colors of the past that do eventually fade with time on the surface, the memories always brighten me up with colorful thoughts.

I have some framed needlework done by my husband’s grandmother. So precious, though slightly faded by time. How amazing that you have your great great great grandmother’s work.
I think those items are priceless and the gift of those crafts are not found anymore. Its great you have something she made. I just love the thought of someone making things by hand and having them in mine after so many decades. They are little treasures.
