In 1973 I drove 6 people in a 14-window VW van down to the old pirate surfer haven San Blas, Nayarit, south of Mazatlan. And back! Hung out at Matichin surfer beach, trying to body surf. And back to the US, me driving all the way.
And despite the Mexican transmission I had to have swapped in ($75) which took forever in small town Mexico fashion- days past our Tourist Card exit date, but nobody checked, of course. And despite having to use a bald VW bug tire instead of a van front tire, because San Blas is a long way from much. Noisy, slow, dangerous old heaps they were but they could hold everything and they ran and ran.
Now that I’ve sold it on so long ago, I come to find out they are now freaking valuable! Yep, my hippie death trap would be worth a hut on the beach at San Blas right now. Who knew? Thanks for the nostalgia.
PS- Just after I bought it I found a baggy of about 500 ‘whites’ that had been lost under the seats, apparently. It had been an Alaska van so maybe that explains it. Or maybe not.
I am grinning. Luv’n your story. So here is my story..
Right after high school a friend came to the door and said Hey man wanna go to Tahoe? I said yes! I was not having a great time at home and I promised myself to leave right after high school and I did. We left, on a rainy day with one giant german shepard dog and hitched it out of town. Soaking wet, we got a ride from a VW bug. It took us to the wine country and from there we stuck our thumbs out and got our next ride in a VW van. A husband and wife straight from the Woodstock going to Tahoe, but with one stop in Gurnieville. We stopped there for one week where I learned to crochet and sell comforters at the Pink Elephant until the husband came in and said Hey man, I got us all jobs in Tahoe at a casino. I said when do we go. Tomorrow he said. I packed every square up and away we went with one extra person happily ever after in a VW van. I always wanted either a bug or a van so I got the bug. Its a Fender edition, not old, but everytime I look at it I remember the best days of my life.
P.S. I don’t think we had any whites left after our trip, we just had bud 😉 Great memories – thank you.

A Frankenstein mobile and a spit-shined van right off the dealer’s lot-fun clash. 🙂
Nice contrast!
One after the other. They must have been together or just lucky to be on the same freeway. Thanks!
