~Lens Artists #237~

Lens-Artists Challenge #237: Softening an Image.

Yesterday’s nice weather had us outside and, in the garden, roses were ready to be plucked and used as the centerpiece for the table. Perfect for this week’s Len-Artists Challenge. In this challenge Bren of Brashley Photography is hosting and it seems it is right up my alley with softening of a photograph.

Model Roses

The camera in my bag is now the Canon R6, and yup, used here with the 100mm lens. It is my go-to camera and lens these days as you who follow know. This lens (as explained in previous posts) allows the image to have a blur to it without any software help. However, the image below was uploaded into Lightroom to emphasize the red rose and add more shadow to the background for this challenge. This made the blur a bit softer and less aggressive on the whites in the image.

I tend to go to the darker and ethereal side of images. I don’t know why… it just makes me happy.

In the below 2 images the processing didn’t need much to soften the look but I did turn down the clarity and add some vibrance in Lightroom as the sun was taking a bit of the color out. Using an f/3.2 made just the area I wanted in focus to showcase the softness of the flowers just a tad more.

f/3.2 spot metering

This challenge was all about processing softness into the image and since this lens does that for me in camera, I haven’t used LR for that purpose in a while, so this was fun to do. There is so much one can do during processing and it is a lot of fun for that creative spurt many of us get. I only put a couple up because of that reason. I spent about an hour just playing around and lost time. *smiling* There could be hundreds… ugh.

  5. These are so beautiful… I love the still life image where the vase casts a shadow and also the one that has the flowers in the right-hand side of the image where you’ve darkened the edges.. Stunning work.

    1. Today is a perfect day to bike ride! I just wish it was safer here. My bike is in the desert now where the roads are much better.

      1. You don’t have any trails? I ride in the city only and the trails are all paved which is nice but crossing the busy roads is always a bit scary.

        1. Yes, we do but they are loaded with people. I don’t have an electric bicycle either, but I am looking in that.

          1. The trails I ride on the west side of the valley are never crowded, I encounter a handful of walkers and bikers on each ride. I have a Pedego Element bike, this is at the lower price range of their lineup and I love the bike. It has 1200 miles on it now! 😎
