There is a lot of black in Nature but it sure was a hard one to find in my greenish-going-brown yard. What I like about Denzil’s Nature Photo Challenge #20 is that most of the time it is a challenge and I get to walk further into realms of my unknown nooks and crannies of the property. However, with this heat… well I went as far as the porch with the 800mm f/11 lens, and what I shot was black intertwined with other colors.
Here is a silhouette of a Sparrow on one of the oaks. It is fun to watch them drink water out of the fountain and then rest above it all. The sun was just coming behind her so it took a pretty good black image of her resting.

Here is one of the garden’s monsters. They are fairly fearless here until the Hawks come about. He has a beautiful blue neck and belly but the eyes are for the challenge. With large black peek-a-boos he looks quite pretty and using the lens makes him look very much reptilic, which of course he is. He even has 3 different names.

And, last is the Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly. They like to sunbathe on the branches of the oaks. I am not certain if this one is an adult or a youngster but in looking this up on the web (Google) they have a group of red on the lower part of the body and some longer portions of the wings which are missing on this one. This one does have feathery fur on its body which makes me think it is a Zebra. Swallowtails are common here but if someone knows for sure if it is not, please leave a comment.

Thank you so much for stopping in for another Nature Photo Challenge.
Til next time…

it absolutely amazes me just how many patterns and color combinations that butterflies can have. and then, here’s a black and white one that is just stunning. great photos, and glad to see that lens is working out so well for you!

Kathleen Jennette, the photos seem to have disappeared from view.
Hi Denzil, I just checked on 2 other browsers and they show. Can you try another browser for me?
It’s very strange, I see no pictures to this post on Chrome, Edge or on my mobile. The photos on other posts are displaying fine.
That is very strange. Maybe your cache needs to clear? I hope we can solve this…
I love your swallow tail. Was trying to work out the difference to our European one but definitely more black! Yes, it was quite difficult to find black in nature today, here in the heat of Spain.
Yes! It was a challenge, and this challenge has taken me farther into looking at more butterflies.
Very nice photos.
Thank you Paul
Nice photos, Kathleen Jeannette! Mr. Blue Belly is kind of handsome. Stay cool man!
Its a hotty here and I know you are stuck in the heat too. The lizards love it…ugh
Oh yes, they do love the scorching heat! It’s 107 at my place, I hope the heatwave will break and not be like this all summer! I miss riding my eBike!
