Normandy, France is an incredibly beautiful place. It’s hard to imagine that such unthinkable events once unfolded there. Today, the landscape feels so peaceful and full of life. These two photos were taken through the window of a bus I was on this past May. I’ll be sharing more from that trip soon. For now, I’m posting these for Monochrome Monday and Through The Window.
This wide, open field in France was once the site of an approaching German force—until they were cut off, and history took a different turn. While visiting, I learned so much about the Resistance and the remarkable network of people who risked everything to protect one another during WWII. Their courage was extraordinary.
I came home feeling deeply humbled—by my ancestors who served in the war, and by the many women who contributed to the effort, including one of my favorite photographers, Lee Miller.
This trip by bus was definitely not so easy on my back. Yet, it was a very good experience to not only hear some great history but to make new friends also. I would suggest a tour on a bus around France any time — at least once.

Very nice. I find it very hard to do landscaped like this in monochrome.
Yes, it is a bit different. I think once I blocked the fact that this is color it seems to apply to the mood I try to get. A lot of the time I am my own worst enemy so to speak when taking photos as our world is colored. I think that is part of the drama.
I come from the old B&W film days, but shoot mostly color now. I recently set my backup camera to default to single shot and a custom monochrome file. All I see is B&W until the files are downloaded. Makes me see in B&W, and fun too LOL
I love that. The digital is upon us who grew up with nothing but B&W film. I kinda like the changes life throws at us. News challenges indeed.
It appears to be a quiet meadow in recovery-much like the forest after a fire. The foliage grows back beginning with an even plane. Thanks for sharing this introspective image Kathleen Jennette. 🙂

You could find some interesting objects with a metal detector in those fields.
Possibly, however I don’t think I would think of that.
